This is a bladder diary which is a very helpful tool to follow the behavior of our bladders it helps us see how our bladders function helps us identify which type of problems we may have and also allows us to track our progress with pelvic floor muscle strengthening, so today I'm going to go through an example of how we fill one of these out in this example you will see on the left side here the hours of the day and moving forward you see the behaviors that we're looking at so one of the most important of these is how often you go to the bathroom and so in this example we may wake up at six o'clock in the morning and go to the bathroom, and it would look then like this we may go later on in the day in the afternoon and before bedtime and also unfortunately wake up once at night another important thing to track is how much you go to the bathroom it's very hard to sometimes track exactly how much you go when you go to the bathroom, but we can estimate for example by using a 12-ounce can of soda as a reference, and you might think that you go about half that when you wake up, so it would look something like this some people come in saying I have to go quite often but when I go very little and so that might look something more like this what's very important is to measure and to record how often you leak, and it doesn't necessarily happen when you're going to the bathroom, so that might look something more like this sometimes it does happen when we're trying to get to the bathroom, and then it would look like this going along with that three o'clock episode where we were trying to get to the bathroom in this column it's very important to try to recognize what you were doing when you leaked urine in these three X's here so for example at eight o'clock in the morning we may have been sneezing at twelve o'clock we may have been at the gym doing something exercise-related this episode it may be somebody who says I was trying to get to the bathroom and I just couldn't make it that's called urge, and we would put that there, but you will also notice that there's another column here called urge which actually tries to describe what it felt like when you were either going to the bathroom or leaking so for example when we woke up somebody might say you know that was a pretty normal sense of urge to go to the bathroom and so you would say and here for normal what other people say for example in this episode it was a race I was trying to run to get to the bathroom and I almost didn't make it you would put an s for strong urge with that finally recording what you drink and what you eat is very helpful, and it's oftentimes hard to do that specifically throughout the day but big things that you want to pay attention to our caffeine alcohol citrus juices things like that and so for example you might wake up and say that at seven o'clock I had my cup of coffee or two you might say that I had some orange juice and at dinner time for example we may have had a glass...
